Anny Jacoby on Voices of Hope on Teen Dating Violence

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

Anny Jacoby joined us today on Voices of Hope to educate and spread information about teens who are in relationships that are mired in domestic violence. We talked about some of the signs that your teen could be a victim and signs that your teen could be partnered with an abuser.

When it comes to domestic violence teenagers are at risk of being the proverbial "deer in the headlights". They sometimes see danger approaching in the beginning of a relationship but don't know how to stop it. Like other forms of abuse, it is important  to follow the child abuse reporting laws for your state. Parents are pivotal to prevent domestic violence and protect teenagers.

We don't have to have all the answers. We just have to love our kids enough to talk to them about teen dating violence.

What Volunteers did Saturday

Here are some of the things that were done on Saturday. This is a typical workday for us except that we had a few more hands than usual. We had a few kids with restorative justice. The goal of the projects is to teach the kids skills that they can use and to connect with the kids. Volunteers serve as one-day mentors. The projects are secondary to making a connection with the kids. It is the connections that help turn around the lives of the kids.

We made cards that will be given to shelters. A rug that is made from recycled plastic bags will eventually find its way to a shelter. When kids learn skills it builds their confidence. They then take the skills throughout their lives. After coming to us they can apply the knowledge toward making gifts for their friends, brightening their homes or maybe even start a small business someday.

The photos that you see were taken by a volunteer. The earrings on the purple cards were done during a previous session and will be sold. Items on white cards may be given to other programs or shelters. Enjoy!

We can't wait until Saturday. In addition to a group of students coming from UT to help we'll also be working with juvenile offenders. There is so much to do! It's our goal to change lives and to get a lot of things done. Look for photos of packaged jewelry, notecards and other items to come soon.

Many thanks to Pleasant Hill UMC for helping to make this happen!

Your Searches Helped us Receive an iSearch Check

Your searches on iSearch have raised $28.43 this month for Hope for Healing.Org. If you have helped us by using iSearch pat yourself on the back. At first glance the money may not seem like much. Wrong! It's enough to pay our webhosting for a month or will almost pay our phone bill. To us, that's a big deal.

If you are not using iSearch it's not too late to start. It's Yahoo powered and free. Their toolbars make it super easy to use! Just go to iSearch and sign up or use the link above to search. It's a great way to help victims sexual or domestic violence. You are going to search the net anyway. Why make the searches count for a cause.

Thank you for your help!
