Using Social Media (Twitter, Blogs, Facebook) to Advance the Cause of Your Nonprofit

If you don't know the difference between a blog, podcast or tweet you're in luck. Our founder, Gayle D'Ambrosio-Crabtree is presenting at the TCADSV conference tomorrow (3/31.) Conference attendees will want to attend. She'll be covering social media basics to help agencies maximize networking and connect with volunteers. Best of all, most of the social media platforms are free!

Complementing this presentation is the ebook Social Media: The Nonprofit Connection It is available for immediate download. This informative tool answers many questions that nonprofits have about social media. It is the perfect adjunct accompaniment to this week's workshop.

PS Don't forget to use the handy social media share button at the top of this page. It makes tweeting easy. Go Twitter!

eBay Mission Fish auction helps us raise funds

Bookmark and Share

A huge eBay / Mission Fish auction is helping us raise funds. Head on over to our auction page to check out all of the neat stuff. Most of the listings are by people just like you. These sellers want to help and are donating a percentage of their proceeds to our organization. Plus, the funds from the listings are guaranteed by Mission Fish (eBay's nonprofit solution) to come to Hope for Healing.Org. It doesn't get any better than that.

Look for the ribbon icon next to the items. This means it's a charity sale! Some of our listings include a poetry book written by a quadriplegic and lots of great items from AmazingStuff2have. We have books signed by our founder plus lots of other auction items that you want to have.

There's lots going on. Why not head over to our Mission Fish site now?

The items that we created will be distributed or sold to benefit our program. Look for us to have these available when our founder speaks on behalf of the National Child Sexual Assault Coalition in Springhill, Louisiana and at other speaking events.

Handcrafted Cards Given to a Shelter and Jail Ministry

This week cards made by volunteers helped make hope happen. These handcrafted cards were given to  a shelter and to a jail ministry. You can imagine that $2 spent on cards and stamps might be a hardship for someone who is homeless due to domestic violence or economics. Women who are in crisis situations don't have the luxury of purchasing cards to send to family or friends. Giving handmade cards is a valued act of kindness.

Some of the cards that we make are eventually sold to benefit  Hope for Healing.Org. (We have to purchase supplies, internet access and basic expenses.)  It is our goal that as many of the cards as possible will be given to the women who need it.

It's part of how we provide education and support to the victims of sexual or domestic violence that we serve and give hope to the people who love them.

Help Knoxville Become a Google High Speed Internet Test Location

Our city leaders are trying to bring Google High Speed Internet to Knoxville, Tennessee. The MPC, KUB and others are teaming up this effort.

All we have to do to help is vote on the Google website and explain why Knoxville deserves Google High Speed Internet. You'll need a Google account to vote. It's free and only takes a minute to sign up. Can you imagine what would happen if everyone with internet voted on this? Why don't we find out? Vote today.

Here's my request to Google. Please don't forget to send yours in as well.

Dear Google, Please Bring Your Internet to Knoxville, TN

Here's why I think Knoxville, TN can use Google Internet. If you haven't gone to Google and voted yet please do.

Gayle Crabtree

Dear Google,

When it comes to educating our kids Knoxville, Tennessee could do better. We already have the best team of dedicated teachers that exist anywhere. The problem is that kids need tools at home that they can use. Not everyone in Knox County has access to the internet.  I believe that Google internet can help with that.

Nonprofits like this one often receive donations of laptops and desktops. Parts from nonworking machines are salvaged to create a working system. We've seen families who received these computers become excited only to have their hopes dashed because of lack of internet accessibility.

Google High Speed Fiberoptics would not just help our county. It would help our children to move forward by giving them the tools they need to succeed. This not only helps Knoxville, Tennessee to have a top quality work force but it will build Google brand loyalty and awareness for generations to come.

We hope that you will consider Knoxville, Tennessee as a recipient of Google Fiber for Communities.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

This is a YouTube video link of the kids we work with as an organization. Please help us help them get internet access.

Give a Day Get a Disney Day Program to Close

We have just gotten word that the Give a Day Get a Day Disney program is drawing to a close. According to the Hands On Network the 1 million ticket mark has almost been reached. If you have already signed up for a volunteer opportunity don't worry. It's our understanding that your tickets are secure as long as you serve on the day, date and time that you registered.

The Give a Day Get a Day program of Walt Disney World has been a huge success. We appreciate everyone who has given their time. It is our fervent hope that you will come back to volunteer again. To put it bluntly, our program needs you and welcomes you. There is always a lot to do. As our volunteers already know it's also fun.

Volunteers Get free Disney Tickets and Make Hope Happen

Many thanks to the folks at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Morristown, TN. Over 13 volunteer cut, stamped and tied packages of greeting cards. Some of these will be sold to help Hope for Healing.Org. Many of the cards will be given to women's shelters and the homeless.

Making the cards is a low-impact activity that allows families to work together. The youngest person who helped make cards was 6 years old! Volunteering is great bonding time for families. The only thing that equals volunteering together is taking a Disney vacation together.

We appreciate everyone who came out to make a difference!

Help! I Can't Afford My Meds

It's a big deal when you can't afford your meds. Too many people face this reality every day but it adds insult to injury when a rape survivor has to jump over this hurdle. There are some things that you can do that might help keep you from saying "I can't afford my meds."

The following is a list of what has sometimes worked for other survivors. If you have suggestions for others please leave a comment in the field below. We're all in this together even though it seems like we're alone.

1. Before you say "I can't afford my meds" don't panic. Call your physician and be honest. Tell your physician that the medicine is out of reach. The best medication is no good if you can't afford it. Samples may be available or the doctor may be able to prescribe a less expensive medication. Sometimes, a little brainstorming at the doctors' office is all that's needed.

2. If your medicine can't be changed ask for information on patient assistance programs. These programs are offered by the drug companies and may help. Not all medications are covered. Paperwork is always involved. Part of the paperwork may have to be filled out by your healthcare professional. Your doctor should have this information. If not, it's worth calling your pharmacist to ask.

Some of the programs are:
NeedyMeds
Partnership for Prescription Assistance
RxAssist may help you research other patient assistance programs.

3. If you qualify, Medicaid may be able to help.

4. Local charities may be able to help. The assistance is usually very limited. Sometimes, they only help with a certain dollar amount or only once a year. Their ability to pay for medications always depends on how much they've been given in terms of grants and people who have been able to donate a few dollars here and there. Rape survivors may be able to get information or referrals from your local rape crisis center. If not, a call to your United Way office may tell you if there's an agency in your town that can help.

5. When you can't afford your meds (and when the other options above have been explored) try calling a local church. The first church you call should be your own. Ask the pastor or rabbi if there is a benevolence or outreach fund that can help. Assistance may be limited or ongoing. Policies vary with each church.

6. ModestNeeds is an online organization that may be able to help. There is an application process. Visit them online to learn more.

7. Don't overlook friends and relatives. They may be able to help you find a way when you can't afford your meds. Friends may be able to help financially or in other ways (like saving aluminum cans for recycling).  They may be able to help with a yard sale or bake sale to help you get over the hurdle.

These are just a few ideas. As a reader of  The Hope Blog you may have other suggestions. Please share them in the comment field below.
